First things first: I am not fluent in Portuguese but I am almost
positive that "Rodizio" translates into "A great amount of delicious Brazillian
style food". If you go to the Rumjungle at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino
you will get my point exactly. We ordered the "Upgraded Rodizio" and were
almost overwhelmed by not only the quantity of wonderfully prepared meats but by
the fact that the quality was even more conspicuous.
Our waitress informed us
of the addition of several new menu items including the upgraded rodizio.
We
smartly allowed her to suggest our meal components for us and she did an amazing
job at it.
Quite a bit of this is due to the fact that the policy at Rumjungle
when it comes to their employees is to have them try all of the items on their
menu so that they are familiar with each and every one and can honestly answer
patrons questions when asked about what is special or most popular etc. I'm
betting that their Human Resources dept. is positively swamped with applications
for this fact alone. They would not be lying in the least if they said that
everything was special because everything that we were most fortunate to sample
was wonderful.
Our meal started with a an appetizer of very good cashew crab cakes
garnished with a unique cole slaw.
We also ordered Rumjungle Juice and a Havana
Cabana both of which were very exotic tasting and made from some of the 205 rum
flavors that are the source of the name Rumjungle and which are featured in the
very esthetically pleasing Rumwall which is the centerpiece of the bar. The
Peruvian salad was a nice change of pace and it was followed by the first
arrival of the skewers piercing some of the most delicious offerings that have
ever graced my plate or my palate. The bacon wrapped chicken was scrumptious
and the beef was as tender a selection as I have ever eaten.
The upgrade part
of the rodizio consisted of a lamb chop, a bacon wrapped scallop and a prawn all
of which were very good.
The vegetables that came next were well prepared but
rather unexceptional especially when compared to the rest of the meal.
The
meats just kept on coming including salmon, chorizo and peppered free range
turkey which comes with a delightful mango and habanero mustard, all of which
were mouthwatering. Just when we thought that we couldn't possibly eat another
bite we were served the "Cuban Cigar" dessert which is some of the finest food
art that I have ever seen right down to the ashes on the tip of the cigar. The
cigar and ash tray are both formed from rum raisin ice cream, covered in
exquisite dark chocolate and accompanied by a shot of Stroh's in a chocolate
shot glass.
To call this simply delicious would be a disservice. As a matter
of fact to call this entire experience anything but fabulous would be a big
undersell. It was all so very tempting that I caught myself looking for Eve
and the Serpent several times throughout the evening. The worst thing that happened was that the busboy refilled my water
glass that was about half full with Voss water with good old ordinary everyday
water. Alas nothing is ever perfect but the Rumjungle comes pretty darn close
and they even have their version of Cirque de Rumjungle replete with high rise
dancing and even higher trapeze acts along with live hot music starting at 11:00
PM. The atmosphere at Rumjungle is grade A and considering the very tough
restaurant neighborhood that Rumjungle finds itself in at The Mandalay Bay they
quite proudly and properly run with the big dogs. You really haven't done it
all in Las Vegas if you haven't done the Rumjungle.
